The Great Cholesterol Myth

If you’re like most Americans, you’ve been taught that cholesterol is one of the main reasons people develop heart disease. You’ve probably also been led to believe that your cholesterol level is the only real indicator for a healthy heart.

Cholesterol has gotten a bad rap. But did you know that without cholesterol, you would die? Cholesterol in of itself is vital for heart function. It’s only when your cholesterol levels get out of balance that there may become a problem. If your cholesterol levels are too high, you may develop life-threatening heart problems.

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do for a healthy heart.

There are a lot of ways to maintain a healthy weight, and do so safely. Eating a healthy diet isn’t the only way you can achieve weight loss. Staying active is vital for reaching your weight loss goals.

Getting the right amount of exercise may also contribute to good heart health. And you don’t have to be a marathon runner, either. Start with a daily walk. It’s the little things that can bring about big changes, but you have to be willing to, literally, take those first steps.

What fats are the smart fats to eat?

Prior to the 1920s, Americans ate all kinds of fats: butter, lard, cheese and beef. And the rate of heart issues was drastically less than today.

Eating healthy fats like those found in olive oil, coconut oil, fish, avocado and nuts help contribute to good heart health.
